Working Holiday Visas for Europeans: Destinations Outside the EU

Working holiday visas for EU citizens — Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and more. Age limits, requirements, and practical tips.

Working holiday programs offer young Europeans the opportunity to live and work abroad for up to one or two years. Several non-EU countries have bilateral agreements with EU member states, providing a unique way to gain international experience.

Popular Destinations

Australia’s Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) is available to citizens of most EU countries aged 18-35. It allows 12 months of work and travel with the possibility of two extensions for those who complete specified regional work. New Zealand offers a similar 12-month program with no extension option but fewer restrictions on employment type.

Canada’s International Experience Canada (IEC) program offers working holiday permits through a lottery system. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan also have agreements with several EU member states, each with unique conditions and cultural immersion opportunities.

Practical Tips

Apply early as many programs have annual quotas that fill quickly. Ensure you have sufficient savings for the initial period — most programs require proof of at least €3,000-€5,000 in funds. Research tax obligations in both the host country and your home country to avoid unexpected tax bills upon return.
