Changing employers in Poland while holding a work permit or combined residence and work permit requires careful planning. The process varies depending on your current permit type and the nature of the change. Here is what you need to know to make a smooth transition.
When You Need a New Permit
A standard work permit (Type A) is issued to a specific employer for a specific position. If you change employers, your current permit becomes invalid and a new one must be obtained. However, if you hold a combined temporary residence and work permit (jednolite zezwolenie), you may be able to modify it rather than starting from scratch.
Minor changes to employment conditions — such as a salary increase or a change in working hours — may not require a new permit if they are more favorable to the employee. However, any change of employer always requires a new application.
The Transition Period
During the period between submitting a new application and receiving the decision, you can legally work for the new employer provided you have the stamp confirming the pending application. This stamp is placed in your passport at the Voivodeship Office when you submit the application.
It is critical to submit the new application before your current permit expires. Gaps in legal employment status can complicate future applications and may affect your residence status.
