Swedish Work Permit Rules 2026: New Salary Thresholds

Sweden raises work permit salary minimum to SEK 28,480/month in 2026 — who qualifies and how the fast-track system works.

Sweden has significantly raised the salary threshold for work permits, continuing a trend aimed at ensuring that labor migration primarily serves high-skilled sectors. The 2026 requirements represent a substantial increase over previous years and have implications for both employers and prospective workers.

New Salary Requirements

The minimum monthly salary for a work permit has been raised to SEK 28,480 (approximately €2,500). This threshold is calculated at 80% of the median Swedish salary and is adjusted annually. Additionally, the employment must offer terms consistent with Swedish collective agreements or industry standards.

For certain professions including IT specialists, engineers, and healthcare workers, fast-track processing is available through certified employers. These employers have been vetted by the Migration Agency and can offer processing times of just two weeks.

Impact on Applicants

The higher salary threshold effectively limits work permits to skilled positions, reducing applications for low-wage service and hospitality roles. Workers already in Sweden on existing permits are not affected until their next renewal, at which point they must meet the new threshold.
