Spain Launches Golden Visa Alternative for Remote Workers

Spain replaces its Golden Visa with a remote worker residency program requiring €2,520 monthly income and offering favorable tax treatment.

Following the discontinuation of its traditional Golden Visa program, Spain has introduced a new residency pathway specifically designed for remote workers and digital entrepreneurs. The program offers a renewable two-year residence permit with a pathway to permanent residency.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of €2,520 from remote employment or freelance work outside Spain. They must hold a valid employment contract with a non-Spanish company or prove consistent freelance income over the previous 12 months.

Unlike the previous Golden Visa, no property investment is required. However, applicants must secure health insurance coverage and have no criminal record in their country of origin or any country where they have resided in the past five years.

Tax Benefits

Remote workers under this program can benefit from Spain’s special tax regime for inbound workers, which offers a flat 24% income tax rate on Spanish-source income for the first six years. Foreign-source income remains taxable in the country of the employer.
