EU sanctions packages have had significant implications for immigration from Russia and Belarus. Visa restrictions, travel bans, and enhanced screening measures affect both short-term travelers and those seeking long-term residence in EU member states.
Current Visa Restrictions
The EU has suspended the visa facilitation agreement with Russia, meaning Russian citizens face standard (non-facilitated) procedures with higher fees and longer processing times. Several member states have individually imposed additional restrictions, including reduced visa quotas and suspension of tourist visa issuance.
Belarusian nationals face similar restrictions. However, humanitarian exceptions exist for dissidents, journalists, civil society activists, and individuals facing political persecution. These applicants can access expedited procedures with reduced documentation requirements.
Impact on Residents
Russian and Belarusian nationals already legally residing in EU member states are generally not affected by visa restrictions. Residence permits remain valid and renewable. However, enhanced background checks have been introduced for permit renewals, and financial screening under anti-money laundering rules has been intensified.
