Bringing Your Spouse to Poland: Visa and Residence Process

Complete process for bringing your spouse to Poland — visa steps, income requirements, housing standards, and work rights.

If you are legally residing in Poland and wish to bring your spouse to join you, the family reunification process involves coordinated steps between the Polish consulate abroad and the Voivodeship Office in Poland. Proper preparation and timing are key to a smooth process.

Step-by-Step Process

First, the sponsor in Poland gathers the required documents: proof of legal residence, employment contract or income proof, rental agreement or property deed, health insurance for both spouses, and the marriage certificate with apostille and sworn translation into Polish.

Simultaneously, the spouse abroad applies for a national type D visa at the Polish consulate, citing family reunification as the purpose. Once in Poland, the spouse submits a temporary residence permit application at the Voivodeship Office within the visa validity period.

Income and Housing Requirements

The sponsor must demonstrate income above 776 PLN per family member after housing costs. Housing must meet minimum standards — typically at least 10 square meters per person. The apartment’s registration (zameldowanie) for both spouses is required.

The spouse’s residence permit grants full work access without an additional work permit. The permit is typically issued for the same duration as the sponsor’s permit.
