After eliminating the real estate route, Portugal’s Golden Visa program continues through alternative investment pathways. The fund investment option at €500,000 has become the most popular route, offering a passive approach to obtaining Portuguese residency.
Fund Investment Requirements
Applicants must invest a minimum of €500,000 in a qualifying Portuguese investment fund. The fund must be registered with the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) and invest at least 60% of its capital in Portuguese companies. Popular fund categories include venture capital, private equity, and real estate investment funds.
The investment must be maintained for a minimum of five years. Fund performance varies, but investors should expect annual returns of 2-8% depending on the fund strategy and market conditions.
Residency Benefits
Golden Visa holders receive a residence permit requiring only seven days of presence in Portugal per year. After five years, permanent residence and citizenship applications become possible. Portuguese citizenship grants full EU rights and visa-free access to 186 countries.
