Austria Red-White-Red Card: Skilled Workers Immigration System

Austria'\''s Red-White-Red Card points system for skilled workers — categories, scoring criteria, and the path to open labor market access.

Austria’s Red-White-Red Card is a points-based immigration system designed to attract qualified workers to fill labor market gaps. The card combines a residence and work permit into a single document and is available in several categories tailored to different skill levels.

Categories and Points System

Very highly qualified workers need 70 out of 100 possible points, assessed on qualifications, work experience, language skills, and age. Skilled workers in shortage occupations need 55 points and must have a job offer in a listed shortage profession. Other key workers need a job offer with a minimum salary threshold.

Points are awarded for recognized degrees, relevant work experience, German or English language proficiency, and age (with preference for applicants under 35). Additional points are given for Austrian study or work experience.

Processing and Benefits

Applications are submitted at Austrian embassies abroad or, if already in Austria on a valid permit, at the MA 35 immigration office. Processing takes 8-12 weeks. The initial card is employer-specific for two years, after which the Red-White-Red Card Plus grants open labor market access.
