Student Health Insurance in Poland: NFZ vs Private Options

Compare NFZ public insurance vs private options for international students in Poland — costs, coverage, and what'\''s required for visa applications.

Health insurance is mandatory for all international students in Poland. Understanding the available options — from the public NFZ system to private insurance — helps students make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage during their studies.

Public Insurance (NFZ)

EU/EEA students can use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for basic healthcare access. Non-EU students enrolled at Polish universities can register for voluntary NFZ coverage by paying a monthly premium of approximately 55 PLN. This provides access to the full public healthcare system including specialist consultations, hospital treatment, and prescriptions.

Private Insurance Options

Many students prefer private health insurance for shorter waiting times and English-speaking doctors. Policies designed for international students range from 50-150 PLN per month. Popular providers include Signal Iduna, Allianz, and PZU. These policies typically cover outpatient care, hospitalization, dental emergencies, and repatriation.

For the visa application process, health insurance must provide minimum coverage of €30,000 and be valid for the entire duration of the planned stay.
