EU Long-Term Resident Status: Benefits Across All Member States

EU Long-Term Resident status grants enhanced rights and mobility across all member states — learn the requirements and benefits.

The EU Long-Term Resident Directive provides a harmonized status for non-EU nationals who have legally resided in a member state for at least five years. This status offers enhanced rights and mobility across the European Union compared to national permanent residence.

Key Benefits

Long-term residents enjoy near-equal treatment with EU citizens in terms of access to employment, education, social security, and tax benefits. Most importantly, they gain the right to move to and reside in other EU member states for work, study, or other purposes under simplified procedures.

The status is granted indefinitely, though the residence card must be renewed periodically. It can only be withdrawn if the holder is absent from the EU for 12 consecutive months or poses a genuine threat to public policy or security.

How to Apply in Poland

In Poland, applications are submitted to the Voivodeship Office. Requirements include five years of continuous residence, stable income above the social assistance threshold, health insurance, and Polish language certification. The fee is 640 PLN for the decision plus 100 PLN for the card.
